Humor Month – Joke of the Day
There was a captain sailing on the sea during a battle. His servant came up to him and the captain said, “bring me my red shirt”.
So, the servant did as the captain said.
After that the servant came up to the captain and said, Why did you say bring me my red shirt”?
The captain said, “Well if i get shot they won’t see the blood.
The next day the servant came up to the captain and said, “There are 50 ships on the horizon.”
The captain said, “Bring me my brown pants.”
Lover’s Day – ah romance. When you are in love, every day is Lover’s Day, but for the folks who are shy may need an extra added boost to get those feelings out. Valentine’s Day is a good chance to tell someone how you feel, but if you missed that chance, you can try again today for Lover’s Day. There are quite a few weddings that happen on Lover’s Day, since it’s an appropriate day for such a wonderful event. Celebrate this day either with someone you love, or letting someone you love know how you feel.
Take a Chance Day – Today is for those of us who have a little bit of the gambler lurking inside. Take a Chance day is the perfect time to do something a little risky! Life is filled with risks, and sometimes to get what you want you have to take a chance! It’s the day to take that leap towards any object or goal. Is it love? Could it be luck? How about something each to take a chance on – like buying a lottery ticket – never know! Taking this chance could set your future on a different course! As “they” say – nothing ventured, nothing gained!” Now, this day could go very nicely with Lover’s Day – since telling someone you love can be quite risky if you don’t know how they feel in return!
World Laboratory Day – Countless ideas, concepts and theories are tested in laboratories. Most of the world’s greatest medical treatments and cures were discovered and perfected in them, after years of endless study and testing. Today we celebrate the place where these great discoveries, inventions, and medical cures are born. Laboratories are also the places where mad scientists dwell – like Dr. Frankenstein and the monster he created! (cue music to Young Frankenstein here – one of the funniest movies EVER!) I used to work in a laboratory, years ago. It wasn’t the sort of laboratory you think of typically though. I worked in the lab in a feather factory . . . yes, you read that correctly . . . a feather factory. I bet you weren’t aware that the down and feathers that are in your coats, slippers, sleeping bags, pillows, etc. have to be thoroughly tested for all sorts of things before they hit the store shelves in their final product form. Of course, nothing I did there translates even slightly into the rest of the work world, but I did learn a lot and know more about down and feathers than anyone else I know, probably more than anyone who doesn’t work in that industry ever would NEED to know. Happy World Laboratory Day to all the industrious lab workers today!
Movie Theater Day – Well, I had to decide whether or not to actually write about this one. I found a listing for it on one of my search sites, but I couldn’t find an explanation of it ANYWHERE! I can only assume that this is the day to celebrate going to the movies- the whole experience. The big screen, the fun previews, the big bucket of buttered popcorn and the soda big enough to take a swim in, and of course sitting and enjoying a movie with your feet sticking to the floor . . .you know what I mean . . . your shoes make that sticking sound when you move them. (its gross, but it IS part of the experience!) It’s too bad that going to the theater has become so costly, since it really is fun, and no matter how horribly calorie filled the popcorn is at the movies, it really does taste better than any other popcorn anywhere else. Do you remember the very first movie you saw in the theater? I’m trying to think back. I know that my parents used to take us to the drive-in once in awhile – but that was so my brother and I would fall asleep in the backseat and they could watch the movie in peace. As far as a grown up theater? I can’t honestly say I remember, but for some reason I think that “That Darned Cat” was one of the first. Oh my, now I want to see that movie – it’s so cute!
Talk Like Shakespeare Day – Happy 449th birthday William! Celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday by finding your inner bard and recite a few of your favorites lines today! So . . . . what IS your favorite of Shakespeare’s works? I can honestly say that my favorite would have to be “The Taming of the Shrew”. A few years ago my boss gave us tickets to go see “A Night With William Shakespeare – a One Man Show”. It was incredible! I’ve honestly rarely enjoyed a show more. This guy really knew the life, times, history and works of William Shakespeare. Great entertainment and if you ever get the chance to see it, do. You won’t regret it.
Food Celebrations of the Day –
National Picnic Day – There’s something about a picnic that is so much fun. When the sun is out there’s nothing quite so nice as packing up a basket of goodies, laying out a blanket and enjoying a meal in the fresh air. In the most famous artistic depiction of a picnic, Edouard Manet’s “Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe,” the spread is notably scant — just some fruit and a loaf of bread. Whatever you choose to have on your picnic – there aren’t any bad choices.
National Zucchini Bread Day – is a day to enjoy Zucchini bread. Initially my question was why now before zucchini even begins to grow? Well, so we aren’t already tired of it, of course! By the end of summer most people have had their fill of zucchini, zucchini bread, and everything else that is zucchini related. So find a favorite recipe, pick up a couple of zucchini and appreciate the coming flavors of spring!
Whether you are celebrating Lover’s Day, taking a chance on something or someone, showing a child how to save money, talking like Shakespeare or any of the other fun things today, do it with a happy heart and a smile. God Bless You. I’ll see you tomorrow.
