Special Edition: It is Cold and Flu Season . . . Are You Ready?

Sep 21st
It is the last weekend of summer, and already we hear of people getting sick with the flu, colds, viruses, sore throats, sniffles . . . you know the list.  We are hearing in the news of illnesses that we aren’t even familiar with that are putting children into the hospital, some with bleak prospects of getting better and going home.   I had a three day visitation from the flu just last week, and I can honestly say I’m grateful it’s the first time I’ve had to deal with this in probably 20 years, and I would be thrilled if I never had to deal with it again.  Hubby started to get it, but stopped short of anything going full blown icky, over it in less than 24 hours.  I’m confident that we won’t have to deal with anything too serious this year, and I’m going to tell you how I feel you can have that same confidence.
I am not a fan of chemical medications.  The side effects are numerous, and let’s face it, medicine is usually to treat a symptom, not cure an issue.  I’m equally, or even more so, not a fan of the flu shot.  So much so that I refuse to get one, EVER.  I watched a relative nearly die from Guillain-Barre Syndrome after getting a shot, spending 6 weeks of his life in ICU fighting with everything in him to survive.  Twelve other people were being treated that year, in the same hospital, at the same time. Half of them died.  No, I will never get a flu shot because taking my chances with the flu just seems like a much smaller price to pay than fighting for my life as my body attacks itself in response to a concoction injected into me.
So, how do we protect ourselves if not for the “miracles” of modern medicine?  I have always been of the opinion that God put everything we need to survive in the earth around us. Nature’s pharmacy is just ready and waiting to treat the common illnesses that come along.  Now, don’t get me wrong – there is a time and place for modern medicine.  There are critical illnesses and injuries that can best be treated by doctors in hospitals, and I won’t for a moment say that abstaining from ever going to the doctor is a good idea.  What I AM saying is that some of the things that come along each year can easily be treated at home with herbs, vitamins and essential oils.  Today I want to tell you about one such oil blend that you can use in your every day life to keep your home clean, kill bacteria and airborne pathogens, keep your teeth and gums clean and generally make your life healthier.
Thieves Oil is an oil blend with an interesting history.  When people first hear the name they always wonder why anyone would name an oil blend Thieves?  The story is an interesting one and goes back a long way.  Essential oils can be made as singles, or as blends.  A single oil would be oils like lemon, peppermint or lavender that are distilled from a single plant.  Blends are just what they sound like, a blend of different oils put together for a specific purpose.  A good example would be the oil blend Valor, which was developed to help people increase their feelings of courage. This is a great blend for veterans who suffer from PTSD.  The Thieves Oil blend was not developed to help people steal, but the story of where it got its name is a good one. Back in the time of the Plague in the 1400s, the authorities noticed that thieves were stealing things from the homes of the dead.  They were puzzled because everyone that came into contact with someone who had the Plague also got sick and died.  They could not figure out how these thieves were staying alive after being exposed to the Plague.  Once they were caught, the magistrate (or judge) told the thieves that he would be lenient with them if they would explain how it was that they weren’t getting sick.  It turned out that these thieves were perfumers and spice traders and they knew what to use to keep from getting sick.  Because of this, the blend of spices and oils they put together to prevent illness was called Thieves Oil.
Today, that same blend of oils is helping many homes by treating ailments that we come into contact with every day.  Thieves oil is made from a blend of cinnamon, clove and rosemary essential oils, which give it potent antimicrobial properties.  It has been found to have a 99.6% kill rate against airborne bacteria.  According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference 3rd edition, Weber State University did a study that showed that Thieves had “killing power against airborne microorganisms” after just 12 minutes of diffusing the oil.  How amazing is that?  There are diseases out there that are not responding to antibiotics, or even combinations of antibiotics, and we are seeing new strains of bacteria that produce enzymes that render antibiotics useless. We need something that is effective against bacteria and viruses that mutate and become drug resistant.  The great news is that bacteria do not become resistant to essential oils.  The oils can be used again and again without any concern of creating a resistant strain.  Essential oils isolate and attack only the pathogenic bacteria and leave the beneficial bacteria intact. If you have ever taken a round, or more, of antibiotics, you have probably felt the effects of having all of your bacteria – good and bad – wiped out.  This leaves our immune system compromised and we are often left with the symptoms of yeast overgrowth (candida).  Incredibly enough, essential oils oxygenate our cells, build our immune systems and combat bacteria, virus and fungus at the same time.  This is NOT something you can get from an antibiotic!
In our home we diffuse Thieves Oil at the first hint of illness.  If we get a tickle in our throat or a cough, we rub a couple of drops on our throats.  When I had a cough last year, a couple of drops in my tea took care of the problem.  Rubbing a couple of drops on the bottoms of the feet can help ward off viruses and relieve fevers and colds.  I use the Thieves Concentrated Household Cleaner to clean the house, wiping down the surfaces as I would with any antibacterial product.  We brush our teeth with Thieves Toothpaste, swish our mouths with Thieves mouthwash, and carry Thieves Anti-bacterial solution in our cars.  Not only do I have the confidence that our home is not blanketed in chemicals, but it smells good from the oils too.
Here’s to a healthy and happy cold and flu season!  God Bless You!
