Run It Up The Flagpole and See if Anyone Salutes Day

Jan 2nd

Well, not sure exactly what to DO with this particular holiday.  I know what I found out it means though.  That is something at least, right?

This little known, and slightly odd, holiday is always on January 2nd.  The expression “Run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes” means to throw out an idea and see what others think, or even if they notice.  It is used commonly in advertising and print media, and first became a catchphrase in the early 1950s.   Run it Up the Flagpole to See if Anyone Salutes Day is a day set aside to give people a chance to do just that, so be creative today.  Today try out and test a new idea that you haven’t given a chance to yet.  It doesn’t have to be limited to business, it can be anything in your personal life too! Try out a outfit you never thought you could wear,or maybe a different haircut.   I suppose you could actually buy a new houseflag, run it up the flagpole and literally see if anyone salutes, but I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one.

I couldn’t find any concrete information about where this special day originated.  The websites I looked at all said it was today, but nobody really knows who started it.  Because it is a common expression it is suspected that someone decided that there should be a special day set aside to try out new ideas.  Today is as good a day as any for that, so give something new a try!

What am I going to try today?  Well, my goodness, I don’t know!  I’m staying home today, puttering around doing the things I always do, so not sure what opportunities to try something new I’ll have, but if I think of something, I’ll certainly let you all know!
