TA DA! We made it to Friday again! Yeah! Is there a happier day of the week? Nope! There’s not! Do a little dance and take a little spin in your office chair (if you have one)! Turn on the polka music (you’ll see why in a minute) and let’s celebrate! hahaha!
Book Lovers Day – Today is the day to set aside electronic readers and sit down with a real book. The touch, feel and smell of an actual book – there’s nothing like it. The history of books began with papyrus rolls, which date back to 2,900 BC. From there written word progressed to stone tablets. Did you know that the first known dictionary was a cuneiform tablet from around 2,300 BC. I had no idea! A great way to celebrate today would be to grab an interesting book, find a quiet corner on the deck, under a shady tree, poolside or in a cozy hammock and let yourself get lost in the world in the pages. It’s one of my favorite things to do!
National Polka Day – I’ve always called polka “oompa” music. I don’t mean it in a disrespectful way, but that’s really the sound the tuba makes . . . “oompa . . . oompa”. Actually polka originated in the 1800s in Bohemia. It is an energetic, triple-stepped dance done with a partner and is often danced with accordion music playing. Depending on where you live in the U.S. you may be used to seeing polka performed at various community festivals and celebrations. I know when we go to Leavenworth, WA for visits we hear it in the restaurants and some of the stores. It’s always a lot of fun and puts me in a happy mood.
Worldwide Art Day – This is a fun one, held each year on the 2nd Friday in August. It is the perfect time to celebrate your creativity and bring joy with it to other people. Everyone has a talent of one sort or another. For some people it’s drawing or painting. For others it could be composing or singing a song, writing poetry or stories, making lovely jewelry, designing intriguing clothing, designing beautiful buildings or even making lovely floral arrangements. The list of possibilities is endless and unique, just as each of us was created to be wonderfully unique. Today the goal is to bring a smile to the faces of others, and help create a more beautiful world to live in – one talented contribution at a time.
1974 – President Richard M. Nixon becomes the first and only president to resign while in office
National Rice Pudding Day – There is something comforting about a bowl of basic rice pudding. I like mine with cinnamon, sugar and raisins – extra milky. It’s warm and sweet, and so very basic and simple that it just speaks to the child inside – the part that never quite grows up. There are a lot of different cuisines that have their own take on it. Maybe try a couple, out and see what you think! That Pumpkin Rice Pudding sounds delicious!
