Onion Rings and Chocolate Eclairs! Two Food Celebrations To Excite The Tastebuds!

Jun 22nd

WOOHOO for Saturday!  Aren’t we happy they come around every 7 days?  I know I am!  Today is going to be a wonderful day.  Hubby and I are heading out for a date day and I am so excited.  Every weekend there are so many chores that need to get done that we put off getting out and having fun.  Today is all about just being together and enjoying ourselves.  I hope all of you do something fun too! Here are a few things to give you ideas to get you started!

Great American Backyard Campout – I love camping.  I wasn’t raised camping, actually didn’t camp for the first time until my daughter was a teenager and my son was close to being one.  It was rough at first – I couldn’t decide what to leave behind, so we ended up actually needing extra vehicles.  Turned into a caravan of way too much stuff.  It took hours to set up camp and often felt like we’d just gotten everything together and it was time to turn around and go home.  It was ridiculous actually.  Over the years I’ve grown and matured and with the help of my hubby, have realized that I can enjoy both types of camping – that with a complete camp kitchen (and I mean complete – propane oven and all), and with everything I’ll need in a backpack.  Tonight is a wonderful even though – it’s Great American Backyard Campout night!  The beauty of this event is that you can set up your tent and bonfire in your yard, and you still have indoor plumbing a few steps away.  This is the perfect set up if you have children!  It just doesn’t get much better than sitting around the bonfire, roasting marshmallows, nibbling s’mores, giggling over silly stories, and finally settling down into your sleeping bags and falling asleep to the sounds of the night.  The best part is waking up and being the first one out of the tent, starting the bonfire and making breakfast as the birds begin to sing in the trees.  Give it a try.  You may find that you absolutely LOVE camping and want to try it somewhere besides your backyard at some point.

Stupid Guy Thing Day – OK, now THIS one is funny!  There really is a celebration for just about everything, isn’t there?  Even a day set aside to commemorate the stupid things that guys do.  (I must interject here – that this day was created by someone who obviously never met men like my hubby -and no, I’m not just saying that because he reads the blog – I mean it!)  The truth is that many men – and I can specifically cite my ex as a prime example here – do stupid things all the time.  It got to the point that it would have been easier counting the things he did that weren’t stupid.  There weren’t very many actually – I could probably get through the list without even using all 10 of my fingers!  hahahaha – yes, I crack myself up.  Anyway, have you ever seen the “Jackass” movies?  Those guys really do stupid, stupid things!  Makes me wonder if they have a chiropractor on stand-by all the time!  I admit I Iaugh really hard  at most of the idiocy they display, but it’s still really and truly stupid stuff.  And what about the movies that show men making really ridiculous decisions – like cheating on their wives, then acting all surprised when  the girlfriend goes psycho and starts boiling bunnies (yes, I’m talking about the movie Fatal Attraction)  In all seriousness though, both men and women could cast stones at each other over things both big and small, but let’s keep a sense of humor for the sake of peace, and learn to laugh at ourselves while we’re laughing at each other.

Food Celebrations of the Day –

National Onion Rings Day – There are good onion rings in this world, and there are horrible ones.  I’ve had both.  I’m sure most of us have.  To me, a great onion ring isn’t too thin, it isn’t too thick, and the breading is super crunchy.  Combine that with a wonderful tartar sauce and it’s a treat well worth the caloric devastation!  Onion rings have been a restaurant favorite for over 100 years.  Here are a few ideas on how to make your own from www.food.com.  No matter whether you make your own, or go out to have some in a restaurant, consider having this decadent crunchy splurge today.

National Chocolate Eclair Day – what can I say?  Two of my favorite food holidays on the came day!  I love chocolate eclairs.  I remember when I was a kid we’d once in awhile pick up some donuts to bring home from the bakery.  I always would stare at the eclairs, and I’m fairly certain there was a glimmer of drool just waiting to make its way down my chin.  It was only on very rare occasions that I got one though because they were much more expensive than the simple glazed donuts were.  When I grew up I made up my mind that once in awhile I’d indulge.  It’s not often that I have one, but when I do, I try to savor every single bite.  A good chocolate eclair is something you shouldn’t rush through.  If you are of a mind to do something completely selfless, and maybe a little on the edge, celebrate both food treats at once – you get the rich sweetness of the éclair, and the salty, crispy goodness of the onion ring.  It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Well, you have your celebration assignments, now head out and have some fun today!  Take this Saturday and enjoy it fully and with enthusiasm!  God Bless You and I’ll see you tomorrow!
