Did you see the sun yesterday? Did you feel it warm on your skin? Did you actually have to cool down the car before heading home? I hope you paid attention and enjoyed it. . . because today’s forecast is for rain again. Might not be a bother for the rest of the country, but in the Pacific Northwest we are giving a collective sigh. We had spring in our grasp and now it’s skittering away again. It did give us hope though, hope that it really will come back and stick around for a little while. I wouldn’t mind having a few days of warmth in a row. Besides the usual Wednesday chores I need to get out there and clean up the garden bed again. I took care of it in the fall, but we have very determined weeds. Maybe I’ll get lucky and we can have a few days of clear weather so I can work on it this weekend.
Holy Humor Month – Joke of the Day – You Can’t Take It With You
A dying man gathered his lawyer, doctor and clergyman at his bed side and handed each of them an envelope containing $25,000 in cash. He made them each promise that after his death and during his repose, they would place the three envelopes in his coffin. He told them that he wanted to have enough money to enjoy the next life. A week later the man died. At the Wake, the Lawyer and Doctor and Clergyman, each concealed an envelope in the coffin and bid their old client and friend farewell. By chance, these three met several months later. Soon the Clergyman, feeling guilty, blurted out a confession saying that there was only $10,000 in the envelope he placed in the coffin. He felt, rather than waste all the money, he would send it to a Mission in South America. He asked for their forgiveness. The Doctor, moved by the gentle Clergymans sincerity, confessed that he too had kept some of the money for a worthy medical charity. The envelope, he admitted, had only $8000 in it. He said, he too could not bring himself to waste the money so frivolously when it could be used to benefit others. By this time the Lawyer was seething with self-righteous outrage. He expressed his deep disappointment in the felonious behavior of two of his oldest and most trusted friends. “I am the only one who kept his promise to our dying friend. I want you both to know that the envelope I placed in the coffin contained the full amount. Indeed, my envelope contained my personal check for the entire $25,000.”
All is Ours Day – This one is interesting. The person who registered this holiday made up their mind that it was going to be a spectacular day for anyone celebrating it! They wanted everyone to think of the concept and imagine the possibilities. The title is all inclusive for everyone, leaving no doubt that today we get everything we want. Wouldn’t that be nice? Enjoying today completely is an awesome way to celebrate it . . . how you choose to do that is entirely up to you. Don’t be disappointed if you don’t actually get ALL that you actually want. Set your goals to something achievable for today and just go for it!
Draw a Picture of a Bird Day – I am NOT an artist. I can say that without any reservations or hesitation. This could be an awesome day for artists who love for young bird lovers to create some beautiful pictures of our feathered friends. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old, or somewhere in the middle. If you like to draw then today is the day to draw some pictures of some birds. is a special day for young bird lovers who like to draw. It doesn’t matter whether you are young, or not so young. If you like to draw, then today is a day to draw pictures of a bird or two, or three, or…Never know! If it’s really good, maybe someday you will become famous!
Equal Pay Day – In 1996, the National Committee on Pay Equity set up the first Equal Pay Day to raise awareness of the gap that is between men’s and women’s pay. This is always celebrated on a Tuesday in April because Tuesday represents how far into the week women must work to earn in a new work week to earn the same pay as men did from the previous week alone. I thought these statistics were interesting: In 2012, full time working women earned a median wage of $691 a week compared to $854 for men. In 2012, full time working Asian women has a median wage greater than women of all other ethnicities. Earnings for women with college degrees have grown by 30.8 percent since 1979, while wages for college-educated men have only grown by 16.3 percent in the same time period. It doesn’t make sense for women to still be dealing with this issue in this day and age. The gap is getting smaller, but it’s more than time for equality with our pay.
Trading Cards For Grown-ups Day – Why is it that trading cards are viewed as something for children? Trading Cards are very valuable things, and quite honestly, putting them into the hands of children tends to mess them up and reduce their value greatly. I’ve known many adults who collect trading cards, holding onto them for years and years. If you have a collection, hang onto it! Never know when the time will come when you need to sell a couple to use the money for something special. Ever see the movie “Blast From The Past” with Brendan Frasier? Collector Trading Cards played a HUGE role in that movie. It’s also one of my very favorite movies. If you have a chance, watch it and see what I mean!
National Be Kind To Lawyers Day – Lawyers really do get a bad shake don’t they? There are lawyer jokes – not typically very nice ones. If you ask anyone what professionals they hate the most, they’ll tell you lawyers. I understand that, I really do! Lawyers often seem like they are only out for themselves, earning them the name Ambulance Chasers, but let’s step back a moment, shall we? In addition to going to college for the four years it takes to get a bachelor’s degree, lawyers must attend law school for an additional three years. And it isn’t cheap! For the 2010-2011 school year, costs for law school averaged between $39,765 and $58,109 per year. Say what you will about them, but when you get yourself into a bit of trouble who is the first person you call? A lawyer. When you want to make out a will who do you call? A lawyer. When you need to confirm that a business deal is a good one who do you call? A lawyer. Yep, seems like for someone that everyone doesn’t like a lawyer is a pretty popular person.
