It’s another beautiful day . . . Tuesday has dawned sunny and bright. We’re a little short on celebrations today, but the ones we have are good ones! All fun without any serious overtones. Some days those are pretty nice to have, don’t you think?
Frog Jumping Day – The first time I saw this celebration last year the first thing my mind jumped to (hahahaha no pun intended – REALLY!) was literally frogs jumping . . . like in a contest. Truth is that nobody TRULY knows what this celebration is all about but the most accepted guess is that it’s about Mark Twain’s first short story. It was first published in 1865 as “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”. It was later published as “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. It was also known under a 3rd title “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. OK. That’s all nice I suppose, but still doesn’t explain why they picked today for this celebration. It isn’t Mark Twain’s birthday, nor his death day. Could be that they just picked a day that didn’t have many other celebrations listed? So how would one celebrate this day? You could read Mark Twain’s story – under any one of the three known titles for it, or you could jump like a frog! Other than that, I don’t have any really constructive suggestions. You could also set up a frog jumping contest . . . just in case that really was the true intention of the celebration.
Leprechaun Day – Apparently the attention Leprechauns get on St Patrick’s Day just wasn’t enough! They had to share the day with that pesky Saint, Irish Pride, and everything that went along with it. It was decided by someone, somewhere, that the little elves of Ireland, with their little pots of gold, needed a dedicated holiday of their own. The legend is that if you catch a Leprechaun he must GIVE you his pot of gold. Short of doing some Leprechaun hunting, my suggestion for celebrating this one is to take a look around you and appreciate the “gold” you have in your life. Treasure isn’t just about wealth, it’s in your relationship with God, with your family, and your friendships. If you truly wish to make it a monetary focal point, perhaps you could spend some time today thinking of ways to increase your own pot of “gold”, or your fortune.
This Day In History –
1965 – The Rolling Stones record the now infamous song “Satisfaction”.
1970 – The Beatles movie “Let it Be” premieres. 1983 – “Mr. October”, Reggie Jackson becomes the first major league ballplayer to strike out 2,000 times.
Food Celebration of the Day –
National Apple Pie Day – Apple pie in May? This all-American dessert shouldn’t be just for fall. And since summer’s right around the corner, make sure your slice comes a la mode!
Unbelievable Apple Pie
Apple Pie With Cheese Sandwich
Grandma Ople’s Apple Pie
Apple Pie Muffins
Brown Butter Creamy Apple Pie
Dutch Apple Pie
Apple Pie Jam
Well, since I love all things related to pie – I’m now hungry for apple pie! There are days that I think these food celebrations will be the end of me! Enjoy your day, no matter how you celebrate it. Personally, I think a frog jumping contest would be fun . . . wouldn’t have the first clue about how to go about getting a frog to jump, since the only ones I’ve seen in contests have been in movies and they’ve been bull frogs! The better celebration to follow through with would be finding a real leprechaun and his gold. Yes, that one would be fun! We can always dream, right? God Bless You and I’ll see you tomorrow.
