If You Could Declare Your Own Holiday . . . What Would It Be?

Holy Humor – Joke of the Day

Three good friends died in a car accident and went to heaven. During their orientation interview, the angel asked them, “When your friends and family are looking down at you in your coffin at your funeral, what would you like to hear them say?”
“Well,” said the first man, “I think I’d like to hear them say that he was a great doctor of the time, and a good husband.”
“That’s very good,” said the angel. He turned to the second one and said, “And what would you like to hear your family and friends say as they look at you in your coffin?”
She thought for a minute, then said, “I’d like to hear them say that she was a good mother, and a good teacher to the children of tomorrow.”
“That’s a good answer too,” said the angel. Turning to the third, he said, “And what would you like to hear your loved ones say as they’re looking at you in your coffin?”
Without hesitation, he said, “I’d like to hear them say, ‘Look, he’s still breathing!'”

American Diabetes Association Alert Day – More than 26 million Americans suffer from diabetes.  90-95% of those have Type 2 diabetes.  In Type 2 diabetes, glucose cannot reach the cells where it is needed, but instead builds up in the body and causes health problems.  Some of these issues are:

* Damage to the nerves and small blood vessels of the eyes, kidneys and heart.
*  Predispose someone for hardening of the large arteries – which can cause heart attacks and strokes
* Cause an increase urination, which results in dehydration
* Cause a diabetic coma

American Diabetes Association® Alert Day® is a one-day “wake-up call” asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This is always held on the fourth Tuesday of every March,  so this year’s Alert Day is today!  If you click the link I’ve provided for the Diabetes Risk Test, you will be asked to answer simple questions about weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. There are preventative tips provided for everyone who takes the test, and also encouragement for those who test as high risk to speak with their doctor.  This test isn’t just available today, so feel free to forward the link to your friends and loved ones so they can take it themselves also.  If even one person is made aware of their risk and takes steps to address the problem today, then it will be worth it!

Legal Assistants Day –  Did you know that in 2010 there were 256,000 paralegals and legal assistants employed in the US?  That’s a LOT!  Apparently they don’t like being lumped in with Office Assistants, Administrative Assistants and Secretaries, and get their very own day.  That’s OK though – they have to have special knowledge above and beyond “normal” administrative work to be able to do their jobs.  And from what I have heard from the few paralegals I have known, they aren’t always appreciated as much as the should be by the people who’s backsides they are covering . . . yes, that would be the lawyers.  So if you know any paralegals or legal assistants, or are one yourself, a big Happy Legal Assistant’s Day to you!

Make Up Your Own Holiday Day – This was hard for me.  This celebration is just an open forum for anyone to choose their own special day, declaring it a holiday for this one day.  It is suggested to choose a day that isn’t already on the calendar but you feel should be.  I tried looking up a few, and doggone it, anything I could think of has already been taken. So what I’d like today to be is National Stay Home From Work and Clean the House So You Have the Weekend Free Day!  Yes, it’s a mouthful, but it’s what I want.  I already have a project to do on my regular week-day off, so an extra day to clean up so I can enjoy the weekend with hubby without any distractions would be awesome. What about you?  What do YOU think would be the perfect holiday to make up for yourself?

Make Up My Own Food Holiday – Same goes for this one – I saw on one food calendar site they were saying that they were making up their own food holiday.  I wasn’t hungry for what they said, so I figured I’d say something else.  So for ME, I’d like to declare today to be Wood Fire Oven Pizza Day!  Yep, I’m hungry for Wood Fire Pizza.  Not just ANY wood fire pizza, but the wood fire pizza from Serious Pizza at Cape Disappointment on the Washington coast.  Nothing even remotely disappointing about it.  What is YOUR choice for a special and individual food holiday?

Official Food Of The Day – Spinach Day – For so many years spinach was associated with the cartoon “Popeye the Sailor Man” (now kids don’t even know who that is! Sad, isn’t it?).  We were taught that spinach contains a huge amount of iron and that eating it would make us strong and healthy like Popeye.  Well, they were right to teach us that spinach is a healthy food, but it is not quite the miracle food that times past would have us believe.  It turns out that when the iron content of spinach was being measured in 1934, the scientists didn’t take into account the differences between fresh spinach and dried spinach.  When the iron content of dried spinach was measured it appeared overstated by as much as 10-20 times!  In reality, one serving of spinach has about 7 calories, 1 gram of protein, 56 percent of our daily Vitamin A requirements, 14% of our daily Vitamin C requirement and about 5% of our daily requirement of iron.  It’s still a super food in my book though, and can be prepared in so many ways!  It can be eaten raw in salads, hot in soups, sauces with pasta, etc. Pretty much, the sky is the limit!

So – you suppose my boss will appreciate my thoughts on a special day off and let me stay home with pay? No? Darn!  Maybe whatever special day you declare will have better results than mine.  In the meantime, eat a healthy serving of spinach, thank a Legal Assistant if you know one, take a quick test for diabetes, and come up with an awesome plan for making up your own special day and your own special food celebration.  Remember, you are limited by your imagination . . . and of course your budget.  Have fun and God Bless You!  I’ll see you tomorrow.
