Do Something Nice Day . . . Something To Celebrate Everyday!

Oct 5th

The sun is shining and it’s turning out to be a stunningly beautiful Saturday.  It’s a little difficult for me to reconcile the events of the nation with the beauty of the day.  It would seem more appropriate for it to be raining and storming, the world crying in response to the horrible things being done by those who are supposed to be leading us, not destroying us.  It makes me so sad and it makes me angry.  People say we need to be careful what we say, for fear of repercussions -but doesn’t that just feed in with what they are trying to do? They want us to give in and just let them do whatever they want, stripping us of our freedoms, one by one.  Our forefathers fought to save from the very restrictions and control that are being imposed on us now.  It will take all of us, standing up for our rights and not giving in, to keep our country free.  This isn’t about choosing sides, about Democrat or Republican.  It isn’t about liberal or conservative.  It’s about all of us, ONE nation, unified to keep our nation a free nation.  In the meantime, we keep our spirits up by celebrating the little things – they can’t take that from us . . . Enjoy!

Do Something Nice Day – It feels good to give to others, to do nice things for them.  It’s like when people say it’s better to give than to receive.  It’s actually true!  Doing something nice for someone else gives a sense of purpose, of satisfaction and warmth that you just can’t get any other way.  For those folks who just don’t do anything nice . . . try it! It won’t hurt! You’ll probably enjoy it!  Bringing a smile to someone else’s face is a great thing, and it often turns out to be contagious.  To celebrate today do something nice for someone else, then sit back and enjoy the smile on their faces.

Frugal Fun Day – The intent of this day is to have fun without spending a lot of money!  In today’s economy not many of us have the extra funds for spending excessively anyway, so finding frugal fun fits right in with how many of us live.  There are actually many free and inexpensive things you can do with the family.  You can have a picnic in your back yard.  Go for a walk or a bike ride.  Fly a kite.  Pull out the board games and puzzles in the closet and have a family game night.  Play cards with friends.  Watch movies at home.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a good time, and today is a wonderful day to explore all of your options.

World Card Making Day – Today is the 8th annual World Card making day.  With Thanksgiving right around the corner you can spend the day making your Thanksgiving and Christmas cards, or stocking up on cards for the entire year.  Make a list of birthdays of family and friends and start making cards for them ahead of time so you are prepared.  If you have friends who like to do crafty things you could get together your supplies and have a card making party – it’s a great way to share supplies and have fun at the same time.  Learn how to do something new like embossing or making your own paper.  If you are feeling charitable you could make cards to brighten the life of people in hospitals, nursing homes or members of our armed forces. There are many organizations who will forward your cards to people who would love to get them.  Operation Write Home or Snail Mail for Seniors could help with that, and with other ideas.  This is a wonderful one for celebrating on a cold or rainy day when you’d rather be inside.  My Mom has a lot of card making supplies, and the talent to make some really cute ones.  I don’t seem to have a great deal of imagination in that department, but really envy those who do.  Enjoy this day.  This is a good one to combine with Do Something  Nice Day – a two in one celebration!

This Day In History

1921 – The World Series was broadcast on radio for the first time.

Food Celebration Of The Day –

National Apple Brown Betty Day  – President Ronald Reagan was famous for his love of jelly beans, but did you know that Apple Betty (a type of crust-free pie) was also a staple at the White House during his two terms?  I’ve never actually had Apple Brown Betty, but the recipe for Grandma’s Apple Brown Betty looks pretty simple and I have all of the ingredients. Hmmmm . . . . may be an option for today.

Well, the day is moving past me quickly, so I will get this posted for all of you and get started on my day!  I have a lot to do and don’t want to waste the time.  The kitchen and cinnamon aromas are calling my name.  God Bless You and I’ll see you tomorrow!
