Well, it’s a single celebration day today, so we need to do it BIG!!! And if that’s what we are going to do, then I’d say today’s holiday is a good one for it. Today is Chocolate Mint Day! We will celebrate anything and everything that is chocolate mint flavored, which is one of my favorite flavor combinations, next to chocolate and peanut butter . . . or chocolate and caramel . . . oh my, now I want ANYTHING chocolatey. Anyway, the most common chocolate mint treats are ice cream, candies, and desserts. Not everyone likes chocolate mint. But those who do love it. Now, I can’t understand why some people don’t like this great flavor, but I do feel a little pity for them, for all the wonderful things they are missing out on. For those of us who love it though, this is truly a great day to celebrate.
Many people agree that mint and chocolate were made for each other. A burst of refreshing peppermint, spearmint, or crème de menthe combined with the smooth, rich taste of chocolate is a truly unique pairing. Some of the most famous chocolate mint inventions include: mint chocolate cake, Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies, grasshopper martinis, mint chocolate soap and lip balm, Andes after-dinner mints, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. Chocolate mint is also a type of herb. It is part of the spearmint family and has edible leaves that taste like chocolate and mint! I have some in my herb boxes on the back deck that come up every year. Tastes wonderful, and even when I’m not making something with it, I love rubbing a leaf between my fingers to release the oils, then just enjoy the lovely aroma that wafts around me. Mmmmm . . .
To celebrate Chocolate Mint Day, snack on a piece of your favorite chocolate mint candy (this is a picture of Dutch Mints – one of my very favorite mint candies),enjoy a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream, or drop a candy cane in a steaming cup of hot cocoa! I personally think I’ll stop at the store on the way home and pick up a package of Sugar Free York Peppermint Patties. They are one of the only sugar free candies on the market that aren’t filled with chemical sweeteners and they taste nearly like the sugared version. Definitely something to look forward to.
Here’s a recipe for homemade Peppermint Patties! http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Peppermint-Patties/Detail.aspx
The recipe looks fairly easy. I found one that I didn’t post because honestly I was skeptical about how it would turn out – that one had mashed potatoes in the candies. I know, I should open my mind, but that’s a little out there for me. This one had a lot of really good reviews though.
And here’s another of Chocolate Mint Brownies – another I haven’t tried, but will as soon as I can am down a few more pounds and will be able to allow myself a treat once in awhile. In the meantime I live vicariously through you, so if you try it, let me know.
Here’s a recipe I found that didn’t look difficult.
Have a delicious day today, don’t eat too much of the good stuff though or you’ll get a tummy ache. God Bless You and I’ll see you tomorrow!
