Be Electrific Today!

Feb 11th

Good Morning and a Happy Tuesday to you!  I thought it was Shrove Tuesday, but I just looked it up again against 3 other calendars besides my 2 main celebrations calendars and it’s NOT today after all!  I guess I’ll repeat my Shrove Tide post in a couple weeks!  It’s actually on March 4th this year!  Geesh, that’ll teach me to start the blog when I’m tired!

Be Electrific Day – I remember when I was about 25 years old, I was helping my ex-father-in-law with putting ties on the electric fence line.  It had been raining like crazy, and I was standing in a low spot by the gate in a puddle.  I hollered out to him to ask if the fence was turned off.  He shouted back “YES!” What he heard was me asking if the fence was ON, not OFF.  I reached up over the tall gate to release the latch, and because of the angle and the height, managed to lay my left cheek against the live wire.  OH MY GOODNESS!!!!  I felt the current go into my cheek and simultaneously it blasted into one of my fillings, and out the end of my thumb.  My whole body tingled and I danced around in place, screaming like a banshee, cussing a blue streak, crying at the same time.  He made his way to where I was still having conniptions and asked me his typical question . . . “You stupid or something? I told you the fence was ON!”  Yeah, I suppose he did.  We celebrate Be Electrific Day on the birthday of Thomas Edison, so we can celebrate all of his electrical inventions and perhaps explore our own body electricity.  I won’t go into much detail here, I’m sure everyone is perfectly capable of looking up Thomas Edison on their own, but one thing I did think was interesting . . . did you know he had over 1,000 patents for his inventions?  Pretty amazing man who made many incredible contributions to the world.

Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day –  Growing up I always thought that this was silly.  In my kid mind I couldn’t figure out why anyone would cry over spilling milk!  Mom always told us that accidents happen, so clean them up and don’t get upset about them.  To me, this was as silly as “Having Your Cake And Eating It Too!”  What’s the point of having cake, if you aren’t going to eat it? Hm? Think about that one, though I’m sure that’s a different celebration for a different day.  In reality it’s not really about spilling milk, but about dealing with the little mess-ups we have now and again with a positive, optimistic attitude – looking on the bright side in all things. Stuff happens, so don’t worry, fret or cry when it does, but just buck up and fix it!  A pessimist and whiner will cry over spilled milk, and honestly, I don’t have a lot of time or tolerance for either of them.  Let Don’t Worry/Be Happy be your motto of the day!

Extraterrestrial Culture/Visitor Day – I admit it, this one made me giggle.  Daniel R. Foley of Roswell, NM, who is a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, introduced a bill “to celebrate and honor all past, present and future extraterrestrial visitors in ways to enhance the relationships among all citizens of the cosmos, known and unknown” I- HB77.  The bill died, but the holiday has a permanent place in the odd holidays hall of fame.  It’s good for a giggle anyway.  Whether you believe in E.T.’s or not, this just was sort of over the top.

Make A Friend Day – We can never have enough friends, right?  No matter how many we have, more just increases our happiness wealth.  This is because friends are one of life’s most valuable  assets.  Today take some time to meet someone knew – making new friends can be easier than you think.  Just starting out with a smile and a hello helps!  Spend Make A Friend Day being friendly and doing special or nice things for others.  Never know, you may make a lifelong friend today!

Satisfied Staying Single Day – I know with Valentine’s Day coming up, there are some single folks who may be sad about being single and not having a sweetie to spend the evening with, but many single people are perfectly fine with their own company!  They want the rest of us to know that being single is fine and that they get the benefit of saving money on flowers and candy . . . unless they choose to buy them for themselves.  As for the rest of us . . . yes, it’s a commercialized “Hallmark” holiday, but I still think flowers are a nice touch.

This Day In History

1809 – Robert Fulton patents the steamboat.
1945 -The Yalta agreement is signed by Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin.

Food Celebration of the Day

National Peppermint Patty Day – Chocolate and mint is a lovely combination, but there’s nothing quite like the peppermint patty.  Yum!  Here are a couple of yummy minty treats from www.food.com to get your taste buds to tingling.
Peppermint Patties
Cheeseburger Peppermint Patty Cookies

I would have included the rest of the recipes that www.food.com puts in with each category, but their other treats didn’t have anything to do with Peppermint Patties!
It’s been a great day to celebrate – lots to keep us busy and having fun!  Please enjoy your Tuesday, no matter what it brings.  God Bless You and I’ll see you tomorrow!
