I have a black thumb when it comes to houseplants. I just do! I was raised by a mother who has all of these beautiful green plants all over her house – they love her so much that they literally cling to, and climb, her walls! Both of my grandmother’s had/have green thumbs – plants just THRIVE/D under their care. Somehow this plant nurturing ability skipped me completely. I keep my plants alive one way, and one way only – sheer stubborn will. And my method probably isn’t the best – when they lean over and look exhausted . . . I water them. If I water them more than that they turn this icky, mushy consistency and die. I’ve killed cactus, every type of plant that likes water that comes into my home, and I’ve even managed to kill an air fern. HOW? HOW did I manage to kill an air fern? I joke sometimes that my plants pull back their stems and leaves when I walk by to avoid accidentally being touched or breathed on by me . . . sad thing is that that isn’t too far from the truth. Some days I wonder at the miracle of my children’s survival. Today being
Houseplant Appreciation Day may not mean much to most people, but to me, it really does! Nobody has ANY idea how grateful I am that there are any green leaves on my plants at all, and that they show some small flicker of life day, after day, after day. Bless them for not giving up on me. I hope and pray that someday I will actually have a couple that flourish and thrive under my care. In the meantime though, I do appreciate them and I am going to show them all that today. They are going to get some water (I know, that should be a given), they may even get some fertilizer (not much or I’m sure it’ll have a negative effect for sure). Heck, I’m so enthusiastic about this day that I may water the plants at work! Ok, maybe that’s reaching . . . but it’s a thought! For those of you who do well with plants, and miss the clutter of the Christmas decorations, maybe get a new plant to fill the space . . . or re-arrange your plants to give them a new spot in your home . . . give a plant to a neighbor or friend, sing a song (if you can sing) to them and see what happens . . . who knows? Maybe they’ll join in, in their own little plant way. Let them know, in some small way, that the oxygen they bring to your home is appreciated and that their green leaves are lovely . . . because they are!
***This picture that I found wasn’t by any means the most beautiful houseplant picture out there – but I thought this set up was so unique I had to show it . . . I may try that someday!***
So, does that plant murdering tendency of mine make me Peculiar??? Maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t, but I’m sure if I look outside of myself and AT myself I’ll find all sorts of peculiar traits I have . . . and if I look at you, I’ll see some of yours. Where am I going with this? I’ll tell you! Today is Peculiar People Day! This is a day to honor of uniquely different people. How many ways are there to describe the word peculiar? Some of the words found in the thesaurus are extraordinary, unusual, strange, odd, uncommon, intriguing, different, abnormal, and quirky. Depending on your view, these traits can be good . . . or they can be bad, but for today we should look for the good in the peculiar folks that surround you. If you are peculiar, this is your day to be honored and appreciated. Chances are, you will find something peculiar about yourself, if you look hard enough. If you can’t find anything peculiar about yourself, then give some recognition and appreciation to the quirkiness of your friends and family.
*Now if you want to see pictures of peculiar people and make yourself feel better about the person looking back at you in the mirror, just go look at some of those photo’s that go through all of our emails showing those unfortunate shoppers at Walmart. If that doesn’t make you feel good and less peculiar, nothing will. I’d post the link, but the opening picture has a naughty word and I won’t forward naughty words*
** These girls in this photo are peculiar in my opinion – they are beautiful, they are talented, but doggone it, the human spine cannot POSSIBLY be intended to go into this configuration **
As you go about your day, feeling like the oddball, singing to your plants, remember to walk this day with God. Be blessed. See you tomorrow.
